Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting took gold at the Asian Games in the women’s 60kg boxing final on Friday, two years after finding herself in the eye of a gender eligibility storm at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Lin beat China’s Yang Chengyu 5-0 to finish on the podium's top step in a category that also saw India’s Priya Ghanghas take bronze.

She added to the gold she won in Hangzhou in the 57kg category three years ago.

Lin told AFP before the Games that she had considered retirement after winning gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics due to the controversy that erupted over her gender eligibility, but wanted to carry on to defy those questioning her right to participate in women’s sports.

She said after victory in Nagoya that she had been “waiting for that moment when the light breaks through”.

“It was really not easy at all,” she said.

“It’s rare to finally reach that point where you see the dawn, and I’m just so grateful to myself for making it through.”

Lin and Algeria’s Imane Khelif found themselves in the middle of a major gender row at the 2024 Olympics, with Donald Trump, Elon Musk and author J.K. Rowling among those weighing in.

Lin and Khelif had been disqualified from the 2023 World Championships after the International Boxing Association (IBA) claimed they had failed gender eligibility tests with no more details given.

The International Olympic Committee allowed them to compete in Paris, saying the decision to bar them was ‘sudden and arbitrary’ by the IBA which by then was widely discredited too. Both eventually won gold medals at the Paris Summer Games.
