Sergio Conceicao warns Amorim: ‘Not easy at Milan, the coach isn’t the problem’

Sergio Conceicao is not looking back on his Milan tenure with much favour, and has warned current incumbent Rubem Amorim that it ‘won’t be easy’ for him in San Siro: “People think they should be winning the league and Champions League every year.”

Conceicao had a short spell in charge of Milan in the second half of the 2024-25 season, a spell that began with a Supercoppa Italiana victory within his first two matches in charge, but was ultimately remembered by supporters for a lacklustre eighth-place finish in Serie A, failing to secure qualification to any European competition for 2025-26.
Conceicao was replaced by Massimiliano Allegri for the 2025-26 season, but that campaign ended in disappointment as well, resulting in a fifth-place finish despite the lack of European commitments and despite the fact that the team had sat in second place for large spells of the season.
Allegri, along with sporting director Igli Tare, technical director Geoffrey Moncada and CEO Giorgio Furlani, were dismissed the day after the 2025-26 season came to an end.
Conceicao believes that this is proof that the head coach has not been ‘the problem’ at Milan over the last few years.
The former Rossoneri and Porto head coach was a guest analyst on DAZN’s Portuguese coverage of the Champions League earlier this week and spoke at depth about his time in the San Siro dugout.
Asked what his compatriot Amorim has in store, Conceicao said: “I send him a big hug and wish him good luck on this new journey, which won’t be easy at all, especially because of the atmosphere at the club.
“There’s a lot of pressure, people think they should be winning the league and Champions League every year.”
Conceicao is willing to admit that things didn’t go perfectly during his time with Milan, but argues that the entire blame should not be left at his feet.
“I was in Milan for six months and things went … I wouldn’t say well, but we managed to win a Super Cup and got to the final of the Coppa Italia.
“Amorim mentioned recently that Milan have won two league titles in 20 years and that is true. One of their two most recent trophies was mine [referring to the Supercoppa Italiana].
“And it’s been confirmed that the coach is not the problem. Obviously, I take my fair share of the blame and I don’t want to shy away from my responsibilities, but we’ve now seen Allegri and the whole management team fall.”
