Tito calls for stronger development of Indonesia's border areas

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian has urged the National Border Management Agency (BNPP) to focus border development on economic growth, public welfare and national defense.

“We want border areas to no longer be seen as the backyard, but as the front yard and centers of economic growth and equitable development,” Tito said here Friday.

Tito, who also heads BNPP, made the remarks during the agency’s 16th anniversary, urging it to use the occasion to evaluate its achievements and strengthen its role.

He emphasized the need to strengthen BNPP’s capacity as a coordinating agency that brings together ministries, government institutions and other stakeholders in developing border areas.

Tito said BNPP’s performance needed to be optimized so it could effectively coordinate ministries, government institutions and other stakeholders involved in border development.

The efforts include strengthening its capacity to formulate programs, coordinate budget support and ensure border development is not carried out on a sector-by-sector basis.

Regular evaluations of ministries’ and government institutions’ border programs also need to be improved to ensure integrated implementation and identify achievements, shortcomings and areas for improvement.

Tito highlighted the establishment of 15 State Border Crossing Posts (PLBN) that have been built and are operating in various border areas across Indonesia.

The PLBN facilities represent Indonesia in border areas, while their construction and renovation have turned them into gateways and showcases of Indonesia’s frontier regions.

Tito praised the management of PLBN facilities and BNPP programs, including disaster response in several border districts in Sumatra and efforts to resolve border issues in Sebatik.

He stressed the need to publicize BNPP’s performance through various media channels, saying transparency and access to information help public institutions build legitimacy and public trust.

The 16th BNPP anniversary also featured Satyalancana Karya Satya awards for civil servants with 10, 20 and 30 years of service, as well as aid packages for orphans.

BNPP was established under Law No. 43 of 2008 on State Territory to manage national borders and border areas in an integrated manner.
