Edwin Sifuna Brushes Criticism About His Age, Declares He Will Be First-Term Senator To Become President
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has declared his intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 General Election, vowing to challenge President William Ruto under his new political vehicle, the Linda Mwananchi Movement.
Addressing a church congregation in Donholm, Nairobi, Sifuna brushed aside criticism regarding his age, political experience, and financial backing, expressing firm belief that his campaign will gain momentum across the country.
“I am receiving a lot of pressure from Kenyans to vie for the presidency. People are asking, ‘Huyu Sifuna mnaita Rais, how will it happen?’ They say I am young and have no money. But I know God’s guidance will lead me. I will be the first one-term senator to become president,” Sifuna stated.
His presidential declaration comes as the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties processes a request to rename the Equitable Party to the Linda Mwananchi Movement.
Disruption of the Political Status Quo
Addressing his departure from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Sifuna maintained that his political journey remains on course despite the setback. He promised to challenge established political structures and build a formidable movement ahead of the polls.
“I was forcefully removed from ODM, but God is still making a way for me. I am now the party leader of Linda Mwananchi, and we are ready to face them,” he said. “Kuna muujiza tutafanya 2027—it is possible to make Linda Mwananchi popular across the country in less than 10 months and win the presidency.”
Calls for a United Opposition Front
Attending the service alongside Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino stressed the critical need for opposition figures to form a united front to prevent President Ruto’s re-election, warning that political fragmentation would only favor the incumbent.
“We urge the entire opposition, from Gachagua to Kalonzo to Matiang’i, to unite so that Kenyans can have a new beginning in 2027,” Babu Owino urged.
Accusations of State Frustration
Sifuna further criticized the Kenya Kwanza administration, alleging systemic intimidation of opposition leaders. He highlighted the recent withdrawal of security details for Siaya Governor James Orengo and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya following public disagreements over regional development projects.
“They are using every tactic to frustrate us,” Sifuna alleged. “The Siaya governor has lost his security. It is God who will protect Orengo, just as they are doing to Natembeya. We will not kneel before that Pharaoh.”
