Takaichi pledges to continue sanctions on Russia over its war on Ukraine

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has pledged to steadily continue Japan’s sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

Attending an online meeting for leaders of the Coalition of the Willing on Ukraine on Monday, Takaichi said, “We will continue steadily imposing sanctions on Russia and supporting Ukraine” with four and a half years having passed since the start of the invasion.

“We always stand with Ukraine, and this stance is unwavering,” she said. The meeting took place in Kyiv.

Referring to Russia’s increasing military cooperation with North Korea and its deepening collaboration with China, Takaichi said, “The security of the Euro-Atlantic region and that of the Indo-Pacific region are inseparable, and cooperation among allied and like-minded countries is becoming more and more important.”

“It is essential for the international community to unite and support Ukraine in order to bring peace to the country,” she added.
