Chelsea: Xabi Alonso makes surprise Estevao squad decision for Manchester United clash

The Brazilian’s lack of influence in the Chelsea squad this campaign has become an increasingly prominent talking point of late. He was a regular feature throughout last season but has been peripheral since Xabi Alonso’s appointment.

He had made just two starts before this weekend, with both coming in the Carabao Cup, but eyebrows were raised when Alonso left him on the bench for the defeat by Liverpool on Wednesday night.

With the match level at 1-1 late on, he opted against introducing Estevao, instead sending Emmanuel Emegha on for his Chelsea debut. The Dutchman went on to miss a penalty in the shootout as the Blues were knocked out.

That came days after he was again snubbed following the injury to Joao Pedro, with another debutant in Geovany Quenda preferred as his deputy.

But Estevao has finally been handed a chance to impress as struggling United head to west London, looking to snap an eight-match winless run.

Facing a poor and unconfident United back line, it is hoped his direct dribbling and quick feet can ruffle feathers and help inspire the Blues to a much-needed victory.

Alonso will explain the thinking behind his lineup before kick-off.

Speaking on Friday, though, Alonso reiterated that Estevao has a role to play in his squad despite his limited playing time this season, and ruled out the possibility of him leaving on loan in January amid reports he might look to greener pastures.

“No discussions about that,” Alonso said at his pre-match press conference. “It’s no secret that all players want to be on the pitch.

“When any of them haven’t had enough minutes because of my decision, I have to take the responsibility for that. But everyone has to be ready because in any game they could be important. Este, his training and his attitude has been good.”
