GEORGE TOWN: A real estate agent has been remanded for two days to facilitate investigations into a fatal crash that killed two friends along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway.

Magistrate Nurhanisah S H Sahul Hamid granted the two-day remand order following an application by the police.

Speaking to reporters after proceedings, the 23-year-old suspect's lawyer, RSN Rayer, said police had requested a four-day remand under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The section deals with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs causing injury or death.

Rayer said police told the court they were unsatisfied with the suspect's statement.

"However, I informed the court that my client had fully cooperated with the police. He gave his statement and went to the police station on his own accord.

"Under the law, any arrested person has the right to remain silent and is not obliged to make statements," he said.

Rayer said the court subsequently granted a two-day remand.

It was previously reported that the 23-year-old SUV driver, suspected of involvement in a fatal hit-and-run along the expresssway yesterday morning, had surrendered to the police.

The crash claimed the lives of a 22-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman from Padang Serai, Kedah, who died at the scene.

Earlier, the suspect arrived at the magistrate's court in handcuffs with his head lowered.
