Team Nigeria Steps Up Preparations For Youth Olympic Games
With just 30 days to the start of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, Nigeria is intensifying preparations to showcase some of its brightest young sporting talents on the global stage as anticipation builds for Africa’s first Olympic sporting event.
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games are scheduled to take place from October 31 to November 13, 2026, bringing together approximately 2,700 young athletes aged 17 and under from around the world for two weeks of sporting competition and celebration of Olympic values.
For Nigeria, the Games offer another opportunity to identify, nurture and expose the next generation of sporting stars as the country continues to strengthen its development pathway for young athletes.

The Dakar 2026 programme will feature 25 sports, in addition to 10 engagement sports, creating opportunities for young athletes to compete at the highest level while promoting participation and interaction beyond the traditional competition programme.
The Games will be held across three host zones in Senegal — Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly — with athletes and officials from across the world expected to converge on the country for the historic event.
As the countdown enters its final month, attention is turning to the young Nigerians who will wear the national colours in Dakar and the opportunity the Games present for them to gain invaluable international experience.
Olopade reaffirmed the Commission’s focus on developing emerging sporting talents and ensuring that Nigeria’s participation in international youth competitions contributes to a stronger and more sustainable pathway for the country’s future Olympians.
Beyond Nigeria’s participation, Dakar 2026 will mark a historic milestone for the continent, becoming the first Olympic sporting event to be hosted in Africa.
