NFL Power Rankings: Minnesota Vikings Stay Unbeaten Despite Kyler Murray’s Offensive Struggles

Perfection is rare in the NFL. Seven weeks in, one team still owns a zero in the loss column, the Minnesota Vikings. The Minnesota Vikings did it with three field goals, a late touchdown and a defense that refuses to blink. Kyler Murray leads an offense that sputters, yet Brian Flores has built a wall on the other side. Is this a true Super Bowl contender or a lucky streak wearing purple? The numbers say both stories hold some real truth.
Brian Flores Turns The Minnesota Vikings Defense Into A Championship Weapon
Look at the 16-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts and the pattern is clear. Minnesota trailed 10-6 at halftime and still trailed after three quarters. Then the Vikings scored 10 points in the fourth. Will Reichard kicked three field goals, and tight end TJ Hockenson caught the touchdown that sealed it.
Flores deserves the credit. His defense piled up four sacks, picked off one pass and held Indianapolis to 218 total yards. Only the Seattle Seahawks can make a fair case for a better unit right now.

Murray arrived after the Arizona Cardinals cut him, and he has given Minnesota steady but modest play. The offense ranks 29th in expected points added per play and 30th in offensive DVOA. The Vikings have topped 275 yards just twice in six games. They have scored more than 23 points once.
Can The Minnesota Vikings Keep Winning Close Games In The NFL?
The schedule tells part of the tale. DVOA calls Minnesota's slate the third-easiest so far and the road ahead the fifth-toughest. Oddsmakers shrug too. BetMGM lists the Vikings tied for 10th in Super Bowl odds, while DVOA ranks them sixth.
Compare that with the San Francisco 49ers. They looked like the league's best team until injuries piled up and they lost at the Atlanta Falcons. One bad Sunday does not erase that résumé.
The rest of the league shows how thin the margin can be. The Cleveland Browns, now 5-2, keep stealing close games, and head coach Todd Monken sees something special in his locker room.
"There's something about this group," Monken said, via the team's site. "There's something about those guys that play the next play and continue to fight for each other."
Minnesota has that same knack for finishing. Whether it lasts, the next few Sundays will show. For now, the Vikings own the only clean record, and in a season this chaotic, that counts for plenty.
