FCCPC earns four honours for consumer protection

FCCPC CEO, Olatunji Bello

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has received four awards and nominations from media organisations and industry groups in recognition of its efforts to protect consumers, promote fair competition and encourage responsible business practices in Nigeria.

The recognitions include the Institutional Integrity & Public Service Award presented to the commission’s Chief Executive Officer, Tunji Bello, by NaijaTimes on Thursday in Abuja, as well as nominations by Daily Independent Newspapers and the Women Enterprise Alliance under the Aisha Babangida Foundation.

BrandXchange also named the commission the Citizen-centric MDA of the Year (Federal) for 2026.

In a statement signed by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, the FCCPC said the recognitions reflected growing acknowledgement of its work in promoting consumer welfare and ensuring fairness in the marketplace.

Presenting the NaijaTimes award to Bello at the commission’s corporate headquarters in Abuja, the newspaper’s Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Ehi Braimah, said the honour recognised the agency’s contribution to consumer protection and competitive markets.

Braimah said the award was in recognition of the commission’s role “in advancing consumer welfare, promoting competitive markets and encouraging responsible business conduct across Nigeria’s economic landscape”.

Responding, Bello thanked the newspaper for the recognition, saying it would encourage the commission to remain committed to its mandate.

“We are encouraged that our work is attracting attention and recognition from different quarters. For us, what counts more is the difference we make in the lives of consumers and in the integrity of the marketplace,” he said.

“These recognitions challenge us to do more, strengthen our resolve and remain focused on building markets where businesses can compete fairly and consumers are treated justly,” Bello added.

The ceremony was attended by the FCCPC Executive Commissioner of Operations, Louis Odion; the Executive Commissioner of Corporate Services, Ummusalma Isiaku Rabiu; and the commission’s directors.

Separately, Daily Independent Newspapers nominated the FCCPC for its Regulator of the Year 2026 award, commending the commission for its “doggedness” in pursuing its statutory mandate.

Earlier in the week, the Women Enterprise Alliance, under the Aisha Babangida Foundation, shortlisted the commission for its Regulatory Body of the Year Award.

In its citation, the organisation said the recognition was intended to celebrate “not only the Commission’s regulatory mandate, but also the broader impact of effective regulation in strengthening enterprise confidence, market participation and sustainable economic development”.

BrandXchange, in its announcement of the Citizen-centric MDA of the Year (Federal) award, cited the commission’s “exemplary service, outstanding achievements, and unwavering commitment to excellence”.

The recognitions come as consumer protection and competition regulation remain important to efforts to promote fair trading, protect buyers from exploitative practices and ensure businesses operate under transparent and competitive market conditions.

The FCCPC is Nigeria’s principal competition and consumer protection regulator. Its mandate includes addressing unfair market practices, investigating conduct that undermines competition and protecting consumers’ rights under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act.
