An informal replacement for Fallout 5 is officially arriving in February 2027, so fans of Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic series may not have to wait too long before throwing themselves into a dark new setting with similar gameplay elements. Earlier this year, the company announced the highly anticipated sequel to Fallout 4, and while details are still very scarce, there’s a lot of conversation about it. For example, Fallout 5 may leave millions of players behind when it’s finally released, mainly due to the fact that it may be released for the next generation of consoles.

While fans wait for the game’s release, players will be given the option to dive into a dark post-apocalyptic setting as early as February 2027. Announced earlier this year, Metro 2039 will be released for PC (via Steam) and consoles next year, offering fans of the first-person shooter genre an option to keep them busy until Fallout 5 arrives. There are some big differences between the two games, of course, but there are also many similar elements that may please Bethesda fans.

During Gamescom 2026’s Opening Night Live, we got a new look at Metro 2039, a new first-person action-adventure shooter developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver. In Metro 2039, players will venture into a post-apocalyptic interpretation of Moscow. For 25 years, survivors of a nuclear war have been in conflict inside Moscow’s metro system, but now a new tyrant has emerged, bringing the threat of war for control over the surface.

Metro 2039 is a single-player experience in which you control a survivor called Stranger, who lives in the wilderness beyond the city and is forced to return to Moscow. While humans are very much a threat to their survival in the game, they are not the only danger lurking in Moscow. As seen in the trailer, monsters created by the aftermath of the nuclear war now prowl the city streets and Metro tunnels. As you’d expect, radiation is also a problem for survivors in this war-torn city.

While Metro 2039 is not fully open-world like a Fallout game, it does possess a lot of the same elements as Bethesda’s franchise. The post-nuclear themes, creepy monsters, and conflicts with other survivors are the backbone of the upcoming game. It also retains a lot of the gameplay elements from previous Metro games, which were fantastic in their own right. Screen Rant had the opportunity to test Metro 2039 at Gamescom 2026 and had a remarkable experience, claiming that it “kicks off with a bang and doesn't let up.

Metro 2039 is already extremely promising, even if we’re still many months away from its official release. Even so, it’s worth marking your calendar for February 2027. The new game may not be exactly like Fallout 5, but it looks like it’s going to be a remarkable post-apocalyptic first-person shooter.
