A 61-year-old Hong Kong man has been arrested for allegedly spiking the drink of Japanese disc jockey Mao Hamasaki at a Tsim Sha Tsui nightclub over the weekend, leaving her in intensive care.

The police on Tuesday said that after investigations by the Yau Tsim crime squad, officers arrested the suspect in Central on Monday in relation to an alleged drugging attempt at PP Club on Mody Road the previous day.

The man has been detained and is being investigated for allegedly administering poison with intent to injure.

Hamasaki, 33, also known as “DJ Mao”, was admitted to intensive care at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei on Sunday after she tested positive for four types of drugs.

The former Japanese adult film actress had performed at a Halloween event in Hong Kong before moving to PP Club.

She said she had two glasses of what appeared to be an orange juice-flavoured cocktail at the Tsim Sha Tsui nightclub. She noticed some cloudy sediment at the bottom of the drinks but assumed it was orange pulp.

Hamasaki said she started her set 40 minutes to an hour later, but her mind grew fuzzy and her eyes felt extremely dry. While performing, she toasted a customer with the second drink and finished it.

“As soon as I finished drinking it, my body began to stiffen. My legs, arms and whole body became completely paralysed, and I have no memory after that,” she wrote.

“The next thing I knew, I was in an ambulance. Apparently, I was having convulsions.”

Hamasaki was discharged from hospital on Monday afternoon after being examined by a psychiatrist.
