Marco Palestra has made his first Premier League start for Chelsea, lining up against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
The Italy full-back was in Xabi Alonso’s starting XI for the lunchtime kick-off, after an injury in pre-season disrupted his preparation for his first campaign in England.

Palestra joined Chelsea in record Atalanta deal
The 21-year-old came through the Atalanta academy and joined Chelsea in July for around €57m plus add-ons, signing a contract until 2033. It was the biggest sale in Atalanta’s history, beating the €53.2m they received from Manchester United for Rasmus Højlund. Inter had also tried to sign him, but Chelsea’s offer was higher.
Palestra made his name on loan at Cagliari last season, where his performances earned him recognition as one of Serie A’s best defenders.
He starts against a United side under pressure. Michael Carrick’s team are on an eight-game winless run and just one point above the relegation zone.
