NTT Data Group (NTTYY) is in the final stages of talks to build a data center in Japan for Anthropic (ANTHRO), with construction costs potentially reaching 1T yen ($6.3B), Nikkei reported, citing multiple sources.

The facility in Osaka prefecture would be Anthropic's first dedicated data center in Japan and could have power capacity of up to 500 megawatts, making it one of the country's largest.

NTT Data and Anthropic aim to sign an agreement by the end of fiscal 2026, which runs through March 2027, with partial operations potentially starting as early as 2028, the report said.

The total investment could reach several trillion yen once advanced servers used to run AI models are included, Nikkei reported.

NTT Data is a subsidiary of the Japanese telecommunications group NTT. It operates data centers across multiple countries, with combined capacity exceeding 1600 megawatts, according to the report.

Japan has seen a series of large data center proposals as demand for computing capacity grows. Plans include a facility with capacity of up to 500 megawatts in Akita prefecture and a 350-megawatt data center in Kagoshima prefecture.
