Taylor Swift Teases New Single, “Patient Zero,” Releasing Ahead Of MTV VMA Honors
Taylor Swift‘s latest single, titled “Patient Zero,” will release later this week.
The singer songwriter put a countdown on her website Tuesday, Sept. 22 with a deep red background leading up to the announcement, and she had previously changed her Instagram bio to “And, baby, that’s sh0w business f0r y0u.”
This will be Swift’s latest release since “I Knew It, I Knew You” for Toy Story 5, which she began teasing at the end of May ahead of the film’s theatrical release in June. Billboards with the signature cloudy Pixar sky started popping up with the T.S. on them ahead of the confirmation.
Back to the countdown on Swift’s website, it led to three options for CDs of the single with various photo options and colors. There is a black CD with a double-sided cover, a periwinkle disc that contains the acoustic version and a dark orange disc with the piano version of the song.
She also posted to her Instagram to tease the new song, which will arrive September 25.
“I’ve been impatiently waiting to tell you that my brand new single “Patient Zero’ will be out on September 25 (!!!!!!!!!!!!) and it’s available to pre-order now on my website for 24 hours.,” she wrote.
Swift is set to receive the Inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, presented Sunday, September 27 at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards. The inaugural prize celebrates a sustained and influential body of work from artists who have pushed creative boundaries and developed a clear directorial voice.
She also recently made a cameo appearance in a pre-taped Law & Order: Special Victims Unit sketch with 2026 Emmys host Mariska Hargitay, whose character in the procedural show inspired the name of one of Swift’s three cats — Olivia Benson. In the skit, Swift played the part of a rookie investigator, popping into an analysis of crime boards that aimed to decipher if she would attend the 2026 Emmys ceremony. She also let fly a mysterious combination of words: “Saccharide, Ares, From The Vineyard, North or South.”
The title “Patient Zero” certainly falls in line with the skit and themes of investigation. One Swiftie pointed out that the title might be in reference to LA Times writer Amy Kaufman’s column about Swift’s romance with Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce. In the piece, Kaufman wrote that “Taylor Swift is patient zero for emotional contagion.”
And if the numbers and symbols in the caption of Swift’s post are to mean anything, there are 12 exclamation points in those parenthesis and four zero emojis at the end. Still, her words uttered in the Law & Order: SVU sketch have yet to be decoded.
