Why All Of Us Are Dead Season 2 Is Taking So Long

Translate

It has been over four years since All of Us Are Dead premiered on Netflix, but season 2 has yet to receive an official release date even though there have been countless updates about the status of the show. The horror K-drama tells the story of a zombie outbreak that begins at a school in the fictional city of Hyosan after a professor develops a virus that turns rage into strength. All of Us Are Dead is one of the best K-dramas on Netflix and has found worldwide success, yet the wait for the second season has been intensely frustrating.

Big-budget streaming shows taking long to return isn’t new. From Stranger Things to House of the Dragon, viewers have learned to wait a couple of years for new seasons of some of the most popular shows across all platforms and networks. However, over four years after the show was renewed, All of Us Are Dead season 2 still doesn’t have a release date. While it's appeared that the show is ready to come out for quite some time, it's not clear when All of Us Are Dead will be back, though it's meant to be slated for a 2027 release.

Question 1 of 3

Despite there being a trailer for the horror K-drama, All of Us Are Dead season 2 has no official release date, and with how many delays it's faced in the past, it wouldn't be surprising to see it move further into the calendar next year. Unfortunately, the reasons as to why aren't the most obvious.

All Of Us Are Dead Season 2 Was Announced In June 2022

All of Us Are Dead season 1 dropped on Netflix on January 28, 2022, with 12 episodes. Netflix had already found a lot of success with original K-dramas, especially 2020’s Sweet Home and 2021’s Squid Game. All of Us Are Dead continued that trend by reportedly bringing 474.26 million viewing hours in the first 30 days according to Nielsen (via What’s On Netflix) and appearing in the Netflix Top 10 of multiple countries. While season 1 fully covered the webtoon All of Us Are Dead is based on, it ended on a cliffhanger.

All of Us Are Dead changed the end of the webtoon, allowing the story to continue past the destruction of the school. This was a clear sign that the show was going to continue if successful. On June 6, 2022, All of Us Are Dead 2 was officially announced by Netflix. Two announcement videos were released, one of which included the show’s lead actors. Interestingly, Cheong-san’s actor Yoon Chan-young was part of the announcement, which indicated that his character was not really dead and was going to return in the second season.

All Of Us Are Dead Season 2 Was Expected To Film In 2024

Per The Chosun Daily, Film Monster CEO Park Chul-soo announced on April 2024 that All of Us Are Dead season 2 was going to start filming in that same year and that the show was going to return in the latter half of 2025. This means that All of Us Are Dead 2 was originally planned to come out three and a half years after the first season, which itself was already a significantly large window but not so different from other Netflix webseries. For comparison, both Sweet Home and Squid Game took three years to return after their debuts.

All Of Us Are Dead Season 2’s Filming Was Delayed To 2025

According to Star News, All of Us Are Dead season 2’s production was pushed back to 2025. This means that All of Us Are Dead season 2 wouldn't start filming until the following year. In other words, the original 2025 release window was made to be all but impossible. Three years, and now even more, between seasons of a big budget K-drama is a huge gap, and the fact that there hasn't been a formal update about when it will be released is even more shocking. Fortunately, there have been updates about the show itself, so audiences know it is coming – they are just in the dark about when.

Per Star News, All of Us Are Dead season 2 moved production to 2025 to ensure a better final product. It must be noted that Sweet Home and Squid Game produced the second and third seasons back to back, which is why their respective third chapters took way less than their second ones. Sweet Home 3 premiered less than a year after season 2, and Squid Game 3 came to light nearly as quickly. All of Us Are Dead 2 taking so long may have been for quality purposes, but feels fairly unprecedented.

How All Of Us Are Dead Season 2’s Delay Can Impact The Story

With All of Us Are Dead season 2 filming in 2025, the Netflix K-drama may have needed to include a time skip to account for the characters' ages. While it is more than usual for actors to play characters who are younger than them – especially in high school and college settings – All of Us Are Dead’s season 2 delay may just be too much to explain. All of the main characters are supposed to be high schoolers during the events of the show, yet more than four years will have passed, which will likely have changed their looks.

Sweet Home, which also took a while to return, included a one-year time jump at the beginning of season 2 to explain why the characters, especially the children from the first season, now looked much older. All of Us Are Dead will also have the difficult mission of recapturing momentum after so many years gone by. Although the show has dedicated fans who cannot for season 2, the general public will need to be reminded of what the show's story is and who its characters are.

Although there's no real update about when All of Us Are Dead season 2 will finally hit Netflix, there's been some headway as of October 2026. A teaser trailer, which doesn't feature anything too specific but instead shows a mob of zombies in the show's traditional style, has finally been released. Sharing that All of Us Are Dead 2 will be available on Netflix, the teaser doesn't offer any true details, but it is clear that there's finally some forward momentum in bringing the show to life. Despite massive delays, All of Us Are Dead 2 is finally gaining strength.
