South African actor Mfana Jones Hlophe, best known for his roles in Generations: The Legacy and Soul City, has died following a longstanding battle with Type 1 diabetes.

Hlophe died on Wednesday night, 7 October, after his family rushed him to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

His brother, Bonani Mambi, reportedly confirmed his death on Friday, revealing that the actor had been experiencing health problems before his death.

“He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital,” Mambi said.

BROTHER REVEALS DETAILS OF HLOPHE’S DEATH

Mambi told the publication that Hlophe had lived with Type 1 diabetes for several years.

His family helped him manage the condition, particularly when he experienced episodes that left him unable to move without assistance.

According to Mambi, Hlophe was alone at home on Wednesday when his condition deteriorated.

His partner discovered him in a poor state when she returned from work.

She initially tried to help him before arranging an e-hailing vehicle to take him to hospital.

The family received confirmation of his death later that evening.

Although his brother spoke about his diabetes, no medical report establishing the precise cause of death has been made public.

GENERATIONS PAYS TRIBUTE TO MFANA JONES HLOPHE

The team behind Generations: The Legacy has joined fellow actors in mourning Hlophe’s death.

The SABC1 soapie paid tribute to its former cast member on Friday, extending condolences to his family.

“On behalf of the producers, cast and crew, we are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Mr Mfana Jones Hlophe,” the production said.

Hlophe played Bra Nimz, also known as Nimrod, on the popular soapie.

Actor Zola Hashatsi was among the first industry figures to share news of his death.

“He practically raised us,” Hashatsi wrote on X, thanking Hlophe for his contribution to South African theatre and television.

Fellow actor Nimrod Nkosi also paid tribute, remembering their time working together on Generations: The Legacy.

WHO WAS MFANA JONES HLOPHE?

Born in Durban and raised in Umlazi, Hlophe built a career spanning television, theatre, music and dance.

He became a familiar face to South African viewers through his portrayal of Jabu in Soul City.

His television credits included Uzalo, Imbewu: The Seed, Isibaya, Zabalaza and, more recently, KwaBaba.

Hlophe also performed in the internationally recognised stage production Sarafina!, following his early work under theatre veteran Mbongeni Ngema.

He appeared in several other theatre productions during his career, including Ipi Ntombi, Gumboots and Woza Albert!

Beyond acting, he worked on developing productions and supporting younger performers.

His family plans to lay him to rest in Durban, where his parents are buried.

A memorial service is also being planned in Johannesburg, although the family has yet to confirm the arrangements.
