While the free monthly games for PlayStation Plus subscribers is a bit of a mixed bag this October, a bonus gift for Premium members might help turn a lot of nay-sayers around. Souls-like games are swiftly launching all the time, but the truly great ones are still rare commodities. FromSoftware has that magic sauce that many try but fail to replicate. Everything from the animations of the bosses, the audio and visual clues and the feel of the weapons can either make a game special or ruin it for everyone.
So, getting the option to trial one for free with PlayStation Plus at launch sounds like the ideal way to test drive a Souls-like without throwing down hard cash in advance. With Souls-like especially, it's not until you've picked up the controller and played around with the dodge/parry mechanics first until you realize if the game is a good fit for you. It just has to feel right and reading reviews can't really replicate that feeling. For every Elden Ring masterpiece, there's a dozen Immortal: Unchained games to sift through.
Valor Mortis is a Souls-like set in an alternate 19th century filled with horrors for players to try to survive. The game launches on October 13, 2026, and PlayStation Plus Premium members will be able to indulge in a free trial of the game before deciding if a purchase is needed. The trial lasts for 90 minutes, which is a little shorter than typical game trials, but should be just long enough to get a taste of this twisted horror RPG. At a glance, Valor Mortis has visuals and artistic flair for days, with the grotesque twisted army soldiers looking like something only Clive Barker could dream up.
In Valor Mortis, you play as a resurrected soldier who served and died for Napoleon. However, the world you reawaken in is very different from the one you left. Filled with nightmarish monsters with a taste for blood, Valor Mortis leans heavily into survival combat and horror. Each encounter is a chance to master your weapons, improve your parries and hopefully learn more about this twisted historical nightmare set in an alternate 19th century European battlefield.
With many gamers saving their hard-earned cash for games like the fast approaching The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TIme remake or perhaps the special edition vinyl soundtrack to accompany Grand Theft Auto VI, getting a 'try before you buy' offer like the Valor Mortis game trial feels timely. And although 90 minutes of gameplay doesn't feel particularly generous, it should be enough time to get to that first boss and get a real sense of whether Valor Mortis is a good fit for you.
Valor Mortis is also available on launch for GamePass subscribers, so there are a few ways to get your hands on the 20-hour Napoleonic nightmare on launch day. Will it stack up against the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive The Duskbloods? Only time will tell, but with only a few weeks until launch, GamePass subscribers and PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers don't have long to wait to find out if Valor Mortis will find courage in death or just be dead on arrival! All signs point to the former.
