With fourteen major installments under its belt, it is no wonder that some Assassin's Creed entries are regarded better than others. Some may claim that the Ezio trilogy still holds that gold star, with entries such as Assassin's Creed Unity still being remembered with a bitter taste in the mouth due to its issues at launch. However, when it comes to Assassin's Creed Origins, the tenth mainline installment in the Ubisoft franchise, many of us can agree that it remains an underrated gem.
First launched back in 2017, Assassin's Creed Origins took players to Ancient Egypt during the reign of Cleopatra. It follows the story of Bayek of Siwa, a Medjay who teams up with his wife to seek revenge against the murder of their son. During this time, they establish the Assassin Brotherhood, as well as beginning the ongoing feud with the Templar Order.
With many considering Assassin's Creed Origins to be a stark improvement on previous entries, it was praised for its voice acting, characters, story, and setting and, thanks to the arrival of its two equally successful story expansions - The Hidden Ones and The Curse of the Pharaohs, it remains as loved today despite it being almost a decade on.
With the tenth anniversary of Assassin's Creed Origins fast approaching, it is no wonder that talks of a remaster have been circulating by fans. Whilst there is no denying that the game has aged well, giving us stunning depictions of Ancient Egypt during this time, games receive a remaster for much less. Although Ubisoft has not dropped any hints of a potential official remaster, it seems as though one creator has taken matters into their own hands to show us just what a modern-day Origins could look like.
Courtesy of Perkovic, with help from the controversial DLSS 5, Assassin's Creed Origins has never looked more realistic in a 5-minute showcase video shared to their YouTube channel. Using a real-time neural rendering AI model, the NVIDIA DLSS 5 software generates photorealistic lighting and shadows in an attempt to boost a video game's visuals more than ever. However, thanks to the inclusion of AI, it is not a program that everybody is on board with. Not only that, but the results offer something of an uncanny appearance to in-game models.
Regardless of what you may think of the arrival of DLSS 5, it is seemingly here to stay, and it is software that many developers will be using in the future, and this Assassin's Creed Origins showcase shows you just what it is capable of. Taking to the comments, fans of the Assassin's Creed saga shared their thoughts. "Looks great," one comment read. "I think that AC Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla got the lighting right from the beginning, so it is mainly a texture improvement from DLSS 5. Amazing games." Another said, "And some people still call this “AI slop”."
With no official Assassin's Creed Origins remaster on the horizon (at least as far as we are aware), it is projects such as this that show exactly how far technology has come in the past decade. However, whether we support it or not is a different story entirely.
