Sundowns take full advantage of Orlando Pirates’ league absence

Mamelodi Sundowns took full advantage of the fact that Orlando Pirates are out of the country due to CAF inter-club commitments.

On Sunday, the Brazilians took on Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership at King Zwelithini Stadium.

This was the third time that these sides meet in the current campaign after facing off twice in the MTN8 semifinals.

This time around, three points were at stake with Sundowns looking to take control of the log.

And Miguel Cardoso’s side did not disappoint as they recorded a hard-fought 2-1 win over Golden Arrows.

SUNDOWNS TOP THE LOG WITH GOLDEN ARROWS WIN

The Brazilians took an early lead through former Golden Arrows attacker Siyanda Ndlovu who opened his goalscoring account for the club in the 14th minute.

Cardoso’s side was lead after the first 45 minutes but Golden Arrows came back stronger in the second half.

Last season’s Golden Boot winner Junior Dion equalised with 14 minutes remaining on the clock, much to the excitement of the Arrows bench.

Sundowns threw everything at the home side in search of a winning goal, and they were rewarded in the 88th minute when Teboho Mokoena fired from outside the box to give them all three points.

As a result, Sundowns moved to the summit of the log with 16 points from their opening six matches while Pirates are now behind them with 13 points from five games.
