‘The Family Stone’ Sequel in the Works With Most of Original Cast Returning

The Families Stone will take place 20 years after 2005 holiday classic, with Rachel McAdams, Claire Danes, Sarah Jessica Parker, and more all reprising their roles

The beloved comedy-drama The Family Stone will receive a sequel 20 years later, with many of its original stars — Rachel McAdams, Claire Danes, Sarah Jessica Parker, and more — set to return for The Families Stone.

Searchlight Pictures officially announced the sequel to the 2005 film — which has become a holiday classic over the past two decades — on Saturday, while also confirming that Family Stone co-stars Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson, Luke Wilson, Elizabeth Reaser, and Paul Schneider would reprise their roles, Variety reports.

“It’s a comedy with a dash of tragedy — the kind of thing that usually makes me puke,” Peter Travers wrote in his Rolling Stone review of the film in 2005. “But I fell for this one.”

The Family Stone also starred Diane Keaton, whose matriarch character Sybil dies at the end of the original. According to the sequel’s synopsis, “Twenty years after their mother’s passing, the Stone family reunites for Christmas only to face the season’s biggest surprise: their father has unexpectedly invited the woman he’s fallen in love with to meet the family.”

Thomas Bezucha, who wrote and directed the original, will return to those roles for The Families Stone. Soon after the death of Keaton in October 2025, Bezucha revealed that he was working on a sequel to the movie. “I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,” Bezucha said. “Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”

Luke Wilson confirmed earlier this year that a sequel was in the works, telling Entertainment Weekly of the script, “Tom Bezucha is a great writer and a great director, and I read the script, and it’s really funny, and it’s so nice that everybody wants to work together again. After the death of Diane Keaton, it’ll be even more meaningful because she was so great to be around on the first one.”
