The following contains spoilers for UndertoneUndertone is a creepy horror film that plays with ambiguity to haunting effect. Set largely in Evy's home as she cares for her dying mother and works on her paranormal podcast, the film steadily grows scarier as her efforts to debunk her co-host's latest discovery open her up to a supernatural force.

Undertone doesn't offer any obvious answers, instead preferring to slowly reveal more about the force seemingly targeting Evy and why it's after her. This plays into the film's darkest aspects and grim storytelling, building to an ending that doesn't reveal Evy's final fate — although it's clear things aren't going well for her.

What Happens To Evy And Justin In Undertone's Ending?

Evy and Justin's fates after Undertone are unknown, but the final scene implies that things don't work out for the pair. Although he's never seen in the film, Justin is the closest thing to a supporting player in the movie. As Evy's co-host on their paranormal podcast, he's the one who brings them the supposedly haunted phone recordings.

As they make their way through the recordings, the pair find mysterious sayings and backwards songs hidden in the audio. As they get further, things also start to affect Evy, such as her otherwise immobile mother mysteriously moving around or objects appearing to shift in place all on their own.

The film also steadily unravels a mystery surrounding some entity that seems to target mothers, with reports of several women killing their own children unearthed. This plays off of Evy's efforts to care for her dying mother, as well as the discovery that she's accidentally become pregnant through her otherwise lackluster boyfriend.

Eventually, as they play the final recording, the pair are called by people who inform them of the grim fate of Mike and Jessa, the subjects of the recording. They also hear audio of a woman seemingly killing her child in a way described earlier in the recordings, before a darker voice kicks in.

The ending of Undertone suggests that whatever entity has been behind the scenes now has full access to Evy. It quickly unravels to the grounded reality surrounding her, even playing footage teaser earlier in the film as a haunted movie that always causes people to eventually kill themselves.

The film cuts away before Evy or Justin's fate is revealed, but it doesn't look good for either of them. The entity has been suggested to be targeting and torturing people for the thrill of the experience, and it appears a similar grisly fate awaits the pair (as well as anyone unfortunate enough to be listening to the podcast live).

While Evy and Justin's final fates aren't revealed, it's clear that neither of them is safe by Undertone's end. This means either or both of them could return in a prospective follow-up, or they could simply be another cinematic example of the cost of messing with forces that one doesn't quite understand.

What Is The Supernatural Force At The Heart Of Undertone?

Nina Kiri as Evy in A24's Undertone

There's no clear understanding of whatever supernatural force is at play in Undertone, although much of the film heavily implies that it is some sort of demonic force at play. This is heavily implied by the film's repeated use of religious imagery, which is subverted at times to reinforce the danger Evy is in.

It's not clear what the entity wants or why it's targeting Evy. The only constant between Evy, Jessa, and the other people suggested to be victims of it is a connection through motherhood. This could be seen as a grisly subversion of the Virgin Mary or as a means of corrupting, typically one of the most wholesome aspects of someone's life.

A big part of Undertone's scariest elements come into play with the ambiguity inherent to the film's presentation of the supernatural. While there's a clear suggestion that whatever force is targeting Evy is real, it's unclear exactly how much of the entity's actions are physically real or just messing with her perspective. That ambiguity makes Undertone all the scarier.

The True Meaning Of Undertone

Nina Kiri as Evy in A24's Undertone

undertone is a movie about a couple of different things, ranging from the standard horror trope of not messing with the unknown to a creepy showcase of how easily work and commitments can overcome someone's sense of self and personality. The clearest theme is rooted in a focus on mortality.

Death is over Evy's head the entire film, especially as she wrestles with her mother's terminal illness. Evy is forced to care for her in this nearly vegetative state, a flip of their dynamic when she was a child. At the same time, Evy is also forced to reckon with her unwanted pregnancy and her conflicted feelings about terminating it.

This interplay between life and death is central to Undertone, especially considering how all the other supposed tragic stories referenced in the film reflect mothers and children dying. It's a theme that goes back centuries, something the movie plays with by reflecting on the dark origins of nursery rhymes.

By leaning more heavily into the ambiguous elements, Undertone reflects questions that have haunted humanity for eons. Birth and death, life and loss, good and evil, none is explained. There is no process to save the day or force out the specter of death. Evy's likely grim fate reflects that, but the film refuses to give audiences a straightforward explanation.

This gives Undertone a dour emotional touch that adds depth to the well-executed horror story. Undertone also notably refuses to offer any sense of closure, even a tragic ending. Instead, it's left to the audience's imagination what happens to Evy and what has been haunting her. It's one of the scariest parts of Undertone, and elevates the film's darker aspects.
