Baste Duterte at impeachment trial: I'll know irregularity, if there's any, in gov't contracts

Davao City Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte on Tuesday said he would be aware of irregularity, if there is any, concerning contracts entered into by the Davao City Hall, including that with GenCorp. Industries Inc.

The mayor made the testimony during the direct examination of private prosecutor Theodore "Ted" Te who asked if the mayor indeed authorized a certain Atty. Tristan Dwight Domingo to sign government contracts on his behalf.

The mayor said Atty. Domingo is the assistant city administrator of the Davao City government and confirmed that he has given Domingo authority to sign contracts for the city on his behalf.

“I named him as my representative,” the mayor said during Day 31 of the impeachment trial of his sister, Vice President Sara Duterte.

The mayor, however, clarified he is not aware of all contracts being signed by Atty. Domingo on his behalf.

“If it comes to my table, yes I would be aware. If there is an irregularity, I would be aware of it,” the mayor pointed out.

Further, the mayor said that while he has named Domingo as his representative, the accountability stops with him.

Ahead of his testimony in the impeachment trial, the mayor said that GenCorp. Industries Inc. won its Davao City contracts worth over P34 million above board, and he was unaware of his sister’s share in GenCorp.

Vice President Duterte declared GenCorp. Industries Inc. as one of her business interests in her 2024 and 2025 Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN).

The Vice President’s name, however, is not reflected as one of the shareholders of GenCorp. Industries Inc. in the company’s records submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission. —KG, GMA News
