HULU TERENGGANU: A 23-year-old woman has been remanded for four days to assist in the investigation into the discovery of a baby's body in a drain at Taman Perumahan Padang Setengge in Kuala Berang on Friday.

Magistrate Nur Athirah Hashim granted the remand order at the Kuala Berang magistrate's court today, effective until Oct 21, to facilitate further investigations.

District police chief Superintendent Sharudin Abdul Wahab said the suspect was arrested at 3.30pm yesterday.

"The case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealing birth by secret disposal of a dead body, regardless of whether the infant died before, during, or after birth," he said.

He added that offenders face up to two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.

It was previously reported that the body of a baby, missing its head and one hand, was found in a drain behind a house in Kampung Padang Setengge.

A post-mortem conducted at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital Forensic Unit in Kuala Terengganu revealed that the baby had been dead for more than 24 hours before the body was discovered.
