Six decades after Gene Roddenberry first introduced audiences to the final frontier, Star Trek is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2026 with a massive assortment of new releases and special events commemorating the franchise's incredible legacy. From new television adventures and exciting video game announcements to exclusive collectibles, upcoming books, and major crossovers, there's certainly no shortage of new things for longtime Trekkies to celebrate the milestone year.

Even after 60 years, Star Trek continues to find exciting new ways to expand its universe, introducing beloved characters and iconic starships to new generations of fans while exploring unfamiliar territory across different mediums. However, not every new addition to the franchise has been met with universal acclaim.

Now, Star Trek has officially returned with another brand-new release, available today, though reception has been a bit mixed so far, with early reviews suggesting that the franchise's latest adventure may not be for everyone.

Star Trek Outposts Unknown captain with gadget

Star Trek's official return to the Strange New Worlds era has been met with mixed reviews so far, following the October 20 launch of Star Trek: Outposts Unknown. Developed by Magic Fuel Games and published by Playstack, the new colony-building strategy game allows players to establish their own Starfleet outposts, manage a new crew with brand-new members, and explore unfamiliar worlds. However, despite its promising premise, the initial reception suggests that not everyone is sold on the idea, at least based on early feedback.

At the time of writing, Outposts Unknown has a "Mixed" user-review rating on Steam, with only a few dozen reviews submitted so far. Much of the criticism concerns the game's relatively straightforward approach to colony management, with some players questioning whether it does enough to distinguish itself from similar titles already available, and others upset that it doesn't do the IP justice.

While there's nothing inherently wrong with a conventional colony simulator, attaching one of science fiction's most recognizable franchises doesn't automatically make the gameplay more compelling. That said, not everyone considers its simple approach a drawback, however. Steam user GameKEEPerXX praised the game's recognizable mechanics and its use of the franchise, writing that it's "Very similar to surviving mars. Love the Star Trek theme. Played for about 2 hours and will be jumping straight back in."

Star Trek Outposts Unknown

For fans who simply want a familiar strategy experience set in the Star Trek universe, that combination may be enough to make Outposts Unknown an enjoyable experience. However, other early reviews have been considerably less enthusiastic. Steam user dmx criticized what they perceived as an unfinished release: "Another game that feels like it was released unfinished. I don't know why this has become the new industry standard."

Their review highlights frustrations involving repeated tutorials, unskippable cutscenes, and crew management, raising concerns about the game's quality-of-life features, which can and likely will be addressed in its early days on the market. Another negative review from Steam user acosnil didn't mince any words: "It's a generic colony sim, with no flavor."

That criticism arguably gets to the heart of the debate surrounding Outposts Unknown. While the Star Trek setting introduces familiar technology, recognizable aesthetics, and an original story set alongside the Strange New Worlds era, some players evidently expected something more distinctive from the franchise's latest gaming adventure.

Nevertheless, it's way too early to say whether Outposts Unknown will ultimately be considered a disappointment. The game has only been available for a matter of hours as of this writing, meaning its initial reception is based on a relatively small sample of players, many of whom have spent just a few hours with it. Further, many Star Trek fans aren't necessarily gamers in the first place, and a colony sim experience could be a hard sell if developers were hoping the IP alone would come with a built-in audience.

As more players explore the game and experience its complete story, the overall consensus is likely to change. There's also the strong possibility that future updates could address some of the criticisms raised by early players,.For now, Outposts Unknown offers an interesting new way to experience the Star Trek universe, even if day-one reviews suggests that the franchise's iconic name alone isn't enough to carry it.
