HSIS Heart Centre handles 69 cardiac intervention cases in a single day

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sultan Idris Shah Hospital (HSIS) Heart Centre in Serdang successfully managed 69 cardiology intervention cases in a single day on Friday.

The Health Ministry said the facility handled 45 per cent of all cardiac intervention cases across the ministry's 10 heart centres.

Operations typically run from 8am to 6pm, with all seven cardiac catheterisation laboratories (Cath Labs) fully operational to meet patient needs.

To clear the remaining backlog after office hours, four Cath Labs continued operating until late at night.

The high-intensity operations involved 80 healthcare personnel, including 14 cardiologists, six medical officers, 10 radiographers, eight assistant medical officers, and 40 nurses and healthcare assistants, the ministry said in a post on X today.

Of the total 69 cases, 40 were elective while 29 were emergency cases.

These included four Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (Primary PCI) procedures requiring rapid action to save heart attack patients.

The centre also demonstrated its expertise in handling complex coronary cases, performing 13 complex procedures using intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) imaging technology to ensure precise and safe treatment.

High-tech procedures carried out included four RotaPro Rotational Atherectomy cases and three Intravascular Lithotripsy cases.

The ministry added that both specialised procedures are designed for patients with cardiac blood vessels that are difficult to treat using conventional methods.

The ministry also expressed its appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for recognising the HSIS Heart Centre as a Health Ministry Cardiac Centre of Excellence (COE).

This achievement reflects the high commitment, efficiency, and teamwork of the entire HSIS Serdang cardiology team in ensuring patients receive fast, safe, and effective high-quality cardiac care, it added.
