AstraZeneca (AZN) on Thursday announced an AI-driven drug discovery and licensing deal worth up to $1.5B with California-based insitro, the Anglo-Swedish drugmaker’s latest partnership in the U.S.
As part of the deal, the companies will jointly identify drug targets and advance new therapeutics targeting metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and cardiomyopathies where there is a significantly unmet medical need.
Insitro will leverage its Virtual Human AI platform for the identification and then advance AstraZeneca (AZN)-nominated targets from discovery to early-stage development. The U.K.-headquartered firm will hold exclusive worldwide rights to the selected programs.
In exchange, Insitro will receive $40M upfront and up to $1.46B in potential development and commercial milestones, in addition to potential single-digit royalties based on global sales of the commercialized products.
The company has stepped up its deal-making activity recently. Earlier this month, Astra (AZN) and its Japanese partner Daiichi Sankyo (DSKYF) reached a clinical trial collaboration with Summit Therapeutics (SMMT) following a $2B equity investment in the Miami, Florida-based biotech.
