Reacher Season 4 Proves Neagley Doesn’t Get Enough Credit For 1 Underrated Strength

Dhruv is a Lead Writer in Screen Rant's New TV division. He has been consistently contributing to the website for over two years and has written thousands of articles covering streaming trends, movie/TV analysis, and pop culture breakdowns.
Before Screen Rant, he was a Senior Writer for The Cinemaholic, covering everything from anime to television, from reality TV to movies.
After high school, he was on his way to become a Civil Engineer. However, he soon realized that writing was his true calling. As a result, he took a leap and never looked back.
Neagley has become a crucial part of Prime Video's Reacher franchise, especially after her new spin-off series. However, even now, she does not seem to get enough credit for one massive contribution to the Reacher series. After watching Reacher season 4 and noticing her absence, it is hard not to acknowledge that Jack Reacher needs her way more than she needs him.
In Lee Child's original Jack Reacher books, Neagley is a recurring and important character. She will soon have a larger role in Lee Child's upcoming spin-off book, Zero Margin, which will feature her as its lead. The Prime Video detective series, on the other hand, has been gradually setting her up as a primary protagonist since the beginning.
Reacher seasons 1 and 3 even retconned their respective source material's story to include Neagley in their rosters. Since Neagley has only been absent from one installment of the Prime Video franchise so far, Reacher season 4 perfectly established why the Alan Ritchson character is better off having her by his side.
Reacher Could Have Avoided Many Mistakes In Season 4 If Neagley Was Around
Alan Ritchson's Jack Reacher was put through a wringer throughout Reacher season 4's runtime. He kept facing one high-caliber threat after another, leaving him incredibly weak towards the end. At the same time, he also could not help but make some flawed judgements about the motives of other characters. He trusted Lila Hoth a little too soon and even got romantically involved with her.
Even after learning that she lied to her about her illness, he went on to believe that she was on the good side. While at it, he misjudged Sampson and even struggled to foresee the scope of the Hoths' terrorism plan towards the end. If he had Neagley by his side in season 4, Reacher would have avoided many of these mistakes.
More often than not, Neagley maintains operational skepticism, which ensures she is never blinded by someone's manipulation too easily. Owing to this, she likely would have clocked Lila and Amisha's lies long before Reacher. In the series, Neagley also helps Reacher process his internal thoughts. Just having her around would have helped him question whether he was trusting the wrong people.
Neagley operates within the legal system and has previously helped Reacher by providing him with digital support. In season 4 as well, Reacher and his team could have avoided a lot of trouble if Neagley had helped them with all the chaos surrounding messy data trails and flash drive hunts.
Not to mention, Neagley's institutional connections and knowledge would have also helped Reacher avoid a lot of legal trouble and ensured that he spent more time solving the central conspiracy instead of being held back by the CIA and the Philadelphia PD.
Neagley Will Likely Not Return In Reacher Season 5
Unfortunately, even though Neagley's absence was felt in Reacher season 4, her return seems unlikely in season 5. Reacher season 5 is adapting Lee Child's Make Me, which already has a compelling female lead named Michelle Chang. Chang not only becomes Reacher's new love interest in the story but also contributes a lot to the central investigation.
Forcing Neagley into the narrative could risk diminishing Chang's role in the overarching story. Also, now that there is separate Neagley spin-off series, the Prime Video series will likely avoid having her in every Reacher season. She might still show up in smaller capacities in future Reacher seasons. However, season 5 will likely avoid having her since she is not even a part of the original book's roster.
