MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) maintained heightened security at major transport terminals and key roads as millions of Filipinos began returning home following the Undas holidays.

“As travelers make their way back to their homes, schools, and workplaces, the PNP remains fully mobilized to keep roads secure, maintain public order, and respond swiftly to any incident that may disrupt travel,” said PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. in a statement on Monday.

“Our priority is to ensure that every Filipino reaches their destination safely,” Nartatez added.

Police units were ordered nationwide to prevent criminal activities, maintain peace and order, and ensure the safety of commuters and motorists amid the expected increase in passenger traffic.

Police regional offices were also directed to maintain heightened visibility and patrols along major highways, bus terminals, seaports, airports, and transport interchanges, particularly in areas expected to see heavy passenger and vehicle traffic.

Nartatez reminded motorists to observe road safety measures as long trips and traffic congestion are expected during the return rush.

“No destination is worth risking lives for. We urge motorists to follow traffic laws, avoid speeding, never drive under the influence of alcohol, refrain from using mobile phones while driving, and take adequate rest before long trips,” he said.

The PNP said more than 1.16 million people visited Manila’s two major public cemeteries on Nov. 1 for All Saints’ Day, while millions more across the country gathered at cemeteries to remember their departed loved ones.

Nartatez urged the public to remain alert and responsible while traveling back to their respective destinations.

“As we conclude this meaningful observance, let us carry home not only cherished memories of our loved ones but also a renewed commitment to protect one another through responsible and law-abiding behavior,” he added. /ms
