Rajinikanth's 'Jailer 2' gets legal protection ahead of release: Madras High Court bans illegal online streaming of Nelson's film

Rajinikanth’s 'Jailer 2' has received legal protection against online piracy ahead of its much-awaited theatrical release on October 15. The Madras High Court has prohibited the unauthorised release of the film on illegal websites and digital platforms, offering relief to its producers before the worldwide premiere.

The court passed the order after the makers approached it, seeking steps to prevent the film from being distributed online without permission.

The decision comes as fans prepare to watch the superstar return in the sequel to his 2023 blockbuster.

Madras High Court issues 'Jailer 2' online piracy ban

As reported by The Hindu, the Madras High Court issued the order after hearing a petition filed by Sun Pictures, the production house behind 'Jailer 2.' The company sought a ban on the unauthorised distribution and streaming of the Rajinikanth-starrer across websites and digital platforms.

According to the petition, films are often uploaded illegally within 30 minutes of their theatrical release, causing serious financial losses to producers.

The makers argued that such piracy could affect the film’s earnings and sought legal intervention to protect its commercial interests. After hearing the matter, Justice P. B. Balaji ordered that 'Jailer 2' should not be released illegally on websites.

Rajinikanth’s 'Jailer 2' set for October 15 release

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, 'Jailer 2' is scheduled to arrive in theatres worldwide on October 15. The film follows the success of the first instalment, which was released in 2023 and emerged as a major box-office hit. The sequel has reportedly been made on a budget of around Rs 300 crore and features a prominent ensemble cast. Along with Rajinikanth, the film includes Suryaj Venjaramoodu,

Vijay Sethupathi

Vidya Balan

, and SJ Suryah, among other actors. With expectations high for the sequel, the producers are taking legal steps to prevent piracy from affecting its theatrical business.

'Jailer 2' makers seek to protect box office earnings

The court’s order highlights the film industry’s continuing efforts to tackle online piracy, which can affect theatrical revenue and the value of digital distribution rights. The production house approached the court to prevent unauthorised copies from circulating as the film reaches audiences across multiple markets. The restriction targets illegal online distribution rather than authorised screenings or licensed releases. As 'Jailer 2' prepares for its opening, the makers will be looking to maximise its theatrical run and protect the film’s commercial prospects. The legal move adds another layer of protection to one of the most anticipated Tamil film releases of the year.
