Savannah College of Education staff resume duties after strike suspension

Translate

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) and the Colleges of Education Non-Teaching Staff Association of Ghana (CENTSAG) have suspended their sit-down strike at the Savannah College of Education in Daboya, effective November 1, 2026.

The industrial action was triggered by delays in the migration of staff, an issue the two unions say remains unresolved.

In a joint press release issued on Sunday, November 1, the leadership of the two associations said the decision followed interventions by the Savannah Regional Minister, who engaged the staff on behalf of the President.

The suspension also followed appeals from the North Gonja District Chief Executive, traditional leaders, the Savannah Regional Director of Education, College Management and the North Gonja District Police Commander.

According to the unions, the Regional Minister assured them that their outstanding concerns would receive the necessary attention and appealed to them to call off the industrial action.

The associations said subsequent engagements between their leadership and College Management had also yielded some progress towards resolving the concerns, prompting the decision to suspend the strike to allow consultations and negotiations to continue.

As part of efforts to resolve the impasse, the leadership of CETAG and CENTSAG has been invited to meet with the Director-General and Director of Budget of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

The meeting is expected to clarify the next steps and establish a clear roadmap and timelines for completing the staff migration process, particularly in relation to the 15 limited clearances.

The unions have consequently directed all members to resume their normal duties from November 1.

However, the associations have cautioned that the suspension should not be interpreted as a resolution of their underlying concerns.

They said the outstanding issues remain a serious concern and that their leadership would closely monitor the implementation of assurances given, assess progress and keep members informed of subsequent developments.

The joint leadership expressed appreciation to the Savannah Regional Minister, the Member of Parliament for Daboya/Mankarigu, the North Gonja District Chief Executive, education directors, traditional leaders, the police, College Management and other stakeholders for their interventions.
