President William Ruto Tours Dangote Refinery in Nigeria Ahead of Lamu Groundbreaking

President William Ruto on Friday toured the Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Lagos State, Nigeria, ahead of the scheduled groundbreaking ceremony for the proposed Dangote East African Refinery in Lamu, Kenya, next week.

The Head of State confirmed that the official tour followed an invitation by Dangote Group President and CEO Aliko Dangote as Kenya finalizes preparations to launch construction of the regional energy facility.

President Ruto commended the Nigerian mega-structure, highlighting its processing capacity of 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day and daily output exceeding 100 million liters of petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel. He also noted the facility’s advanced maritime infrastructure, which utilizes 120 kilometers of subsea pipelines to transfer crude oil directly from tankers to the refinery.

“This huge achievement is a testament of what African governments, investors and financial institutions can do together,” President Ruto stated.

The President disclosed that the upcoming Lamu facility is envisioned to surpass the Nigerian plant in scale, serving as a catalyst for structural transformation across Kenya’s energy sector and the wider East African economy.

According to President Ruto, the Lamu mega-project is projected to generate approximately 60,000 direct and indirect jobs while enhancing domestic fuel reliability and supply security. He added that the refinery will anchor an industrial ecosystem by stimulating auxiliary manufacturing sectors, including fertilizer production, petrochemical processing, and packaging industries, thereby positioning Kenya as a regional petroleum and manufacturing hub.
