Indonesia strengthens AI use in event tourism, MICE sector

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Tourism Minister Ni Luh Puspa stressed that the Indonesian government continues to strengthen the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in developing the event tourism and Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector.
"We are entering the tourism 5.0 era, where technology, AI, big data, and the internet of things have become important parts of creating a more personal and relevant tourism experience," Puspa said at the Indonesia Tourism & MICE Outlook 2027 event here on Thursday.
She highlighted that the use of technology and AI plays an important role in creating a more personal and relevant tourism experience.
In events and MICE, technology can be used from the trip-planning stage, registration, and participant management, to interactions during the event, and recommendations for destinations and activities afterward.
The Tourism Ministry has introduced its Meticulous Artificial Intelligence of Indonesia (MaiA), which helps tourists plan trips more easily. It has been integrated into the Indonesia.travel platform, which includes travel planner and travel companion features.
"MaiA helps tourists find travel inspiration, put together itineraries, get more personalized destination recommendations, use interactive maps, and access information in various languages," she said.
Even so, she stressed that AI only serves as a tool to help provide solutions and cannot replace the hospitality of the Indonesian people.
Puspa also highlighted the importance of strengthening destination readiness, tourism connectivity, integrating technology with human resource development, and promoting sustainable, inclusive events that provide real benefits for MSMEs and local communities.
"The new value of Indonesian tourism lies in our ability to turn every event into an experience, and every experience into value," Puspa said.
According to her, that value must be reflected in a moving economy, jobs created, widely known culture, a preserved environment, and Indonesia's growing global reputation.
She noted that in the first half of 2026, foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia reached 7.45 million visits, up 5.71 percent compared to the same period in 2025.
During that period, domestic tourist trips reached 630.41 million, while tourism foreign exchange earnings stood at US$8.43 billion.
According to data released by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), growth was also recorded in July 2026, with foreign tourist arrivals reaching 1.53 million visits.
Meanwhile, domestic tourist trips throughout July 2026 reached 107.4 million, up 7.23 percent year-on-year.
