The penultimate episode of Ted Lasso season 4 left plenty of questions for the finale.

How would the characters deal with the death of Mae? Would Zelda succeed in her plot to buy a majority stale in Richmond and oust Rebecca as the club's owner? And where would we leave things with Ted and the other key characters heading into a potential season 5?

In the end, all of these questions and more were answered, with some big moves being made to a set up a season 5 which could potentially look quite different.

But just what did happen in the finale and how did the season end? Read on for everything you need to know about the ending of Ted Lasso season 4.

No, Zelda didn't get control of Richmond. It at first seemed as though she had, as the milk sisters were revealed to have sold their shares.

Zelda then appeared at the annual stakeholder meeting and revealed her plan to steal the club, predominantly so she could own the premier league men's team and finally get the respect she had been craving.

However, Zelda's agent had actually sold her out to Rebecca and Higgins, with Rebecca subsequently buying the milk sisters' shares herself. She also acquired Mae's shares, which had been left to Rebecca in Mae's will, meaning that Rebecca retained control.

Despite her treachery, Rebecca quickly forgave Zelda and decided to keep her on at Richmond.

Did any characters make surprise appearances?

They certainly did. In fact, almost all of the central figures from the past three seasons who fans had been clamouring to return did so.

Most prominent was the return of Nick Mohammed as Nathan 'Nate' Shelley, who was first seen along with his now-wife Jade and their new baby, watching Keeley's latest viral video for the Richmond women's team.

It appeared then that he might have just been making the briefest of appearances, but Nate later showed up at the Richmond ground, heading to Nate's office and taking part in a meeting of the Diamond Dogs. While there, it was revealed that he is now coaching the Poland national team.

After this, almost the entire men's team from Richmond made a brief return, appearing in the crowd at the final match of the season for the women's team.

This included Cristo Fernández, Kola Bokinni, Billy Harris and many more, although the only one to speak was Toheeb Jimoh as Sam Obisanya, who was seen having a conversation with Roy Kent.

Were there any other big changes?

Boy, were there.

Baz, Jeremy, and Paul became owners and landlords at the Crown & Anchor, after being left in charge of the beloved pub by Mae in her will.

Roy got offered a new role as head coach at Chelsea, which he decided to take, leaving Richmond behind, while embracing his future role as a father to his and Keeley's child.

Meanwhile, Rebecca proposed to Matthijs, who accepted, meaning they will be getting married.

Perhaps most crucially, Ted decided to step down from his position as head coach of the women's team, relegating himself to assistant coach and allowing Alice to take the lead.
