Prime Video's 10/10 'Tolkien Meets GRRM' Series Is So Good, It Got 5 Seasons And A Spinoff

In those few cases where a fantasy show really works, it's because they find a masterful balance between what Tolkien and Martin brought to the table while still providing their own unique flavor.
That's precisely what Prime Video's The Legend of Vox Machina achieved. This animated fantasy series is based on the first Dungeons & Dragons campaign of real-play YouTube channel Critical Role, which automatically makes it wholly unique. This was an organically developed story that viewers first watched play out on the tabletop, and have now had a chance to see in breathtaking animation. The Legend of Vox Machina didn't lean entirely on its own uniqueness, however, as the parallels between Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire are perfectly evident.
It could be argued that Tolkien inspires anything related to Dungeons & Dragons. As the grandfather of high fantasy, this author demonstrated to the world what the mystical worlds of fiction could look like. The Legend of Vox Machina embraces this wholeheartedly, centralizing all the necessary tropes while embracing Tolkien's themes of sacrifice, determination, and authentic goodness. Then, we get a sprinkling of Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, with R-rated violence, masterful comedic touches, and a high-fantasy world defined by grit. It's about as perfect as it gets.
The Legend Of Vox Machina's Lore Will Only Continue To Grow & Develop
The primary reason that Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire continue to impact the high fantasy genre so heavily is that both these worlds are exhaustively developed. The authors spent years building out their legendariums, detailing complex family trees, outlining in-world mythologies and legends, and even creating languages and religions. With such a strong foundation, there is no need for either of these franchises ever truly to end. They can be expanded in any direction.
This is another element that The Legend of Vox Machina has embraced. The established lore of Dungeons & Dragons certainly helps. Still, the years that these characters have organically developed through dozens of role-play sessions help them feel like true, living, breathing figures. It's this that has allowed The Legend of Vox Machina to thrive across its four existing seasons, with a near-impossible 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. The story will come to a close with season 5, but the franchise has already begun to expand.
The Mighty Nein, based on Critical Role's campaign 2, premiered in 2025 and also has a spectacular 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It's unclear how many seasons this animated spinoff will have, but the fact that it is already doing so well suggests the franchise is nowhere near its overarching conclusion. Like the work of Tolkien and Martin, the stories established by The Legend of Vox Machina can easily carry on forever. Once again, we have a story that perfectly defines the high fantasy genre.
