Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh will face off in a Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match at the VCA Jamtha Stadium in Nagpur beginning on Monday, with significant implications for both sides’ knockout qualification.

Three rounds into the season, Group A has begun to noticeably bifurcate, with the top four sides – Vidarbha, Baroda, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh – creating significant breathing space from the remaining four – defending champion Jammu and Kashmir, Pondicherry, Goa, and Bihar.

Host Vidarbha leads the way among the quartet, having secured outright wins in all three of its matches thus far as well as a bonus point by virtue of its innings victory in its last outing against Goa at the same venue.

Its batting lineup faced some early struggles but the Goa match provided a salve to those issues as it piled on the runs on its way to a sizable first-innings lead. Dhruv Shorey led the way with an assured 168, while there were also half-centuries for R. Samarth, Danish Malewar, and captain Akshay Wadkar.

However, a settled opening partnership remains the missing piece for Vidarbha. Youngster Satyam Bhoyar opened against Goa in his first appearance of the season alongside Aman Mokhade, but it has used a different opening pair in every match so far this season.

On the bowling front, things continue to look rosy with seamers Nachiket Bhute and the returning Rajneesh Gurbani looking in fine rhythm, while Harsh Dubey’s left-arm spin made the difference on the final day against Goa with four wickets post-Lunch.

However, it will be sans the services Yash Thakur – who is in India’s squad for the final two New Zealand ODIs – with Praful Hinge likely to take his place.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh will perhaps consider itself unlucky to be sitting at the rear of the competing quartet.

It was forced to settle for a draw despite claiming a first-innings lead in its first two matches after losing significant time to poor weather, although it secured its first outright win against Bihar in the last round.

Despite the lack of results, there have been plenty of positives. Rajat Patidar, the headline name on the batting front, has peeled off two centuries from his two innings thus far, while there have also been early runs for Shubham Sharma, Yash Dubey, and the fresh duo of Chanchal Rathore and Saksham Purohit, both of whom have made their debuts this season.

Saransh Jain was the unquestionable star with the ball against Bihar, claiming 13 wickets to wrap up the innings victory inside two days, while Avesh Khan has impressed for nine wickets in his first two First-Class matches since the 2024-25 season. Together with the guile of Kumar Kartikeya and hustling left-arm pace of Arshad Khan, MP arrives armed with plenty of bowling firepower.

Adding to the intrigue, MP is led from the dugout by veteran coach Chandrakant Pandit, who was in charge for Vidarbha’s back-to-back titles in 2017-18 and 2018-19 before leading MP to its maiden title in 2021-22.

The last time these two sides met came in the semifinals of the 2023-24 season (where Vidarbha coming out on top) and while the stakes of this encounter may not be quite as high, securing points will be crucial if they are to retain ambitions that lofty.
