Driver escapes as police intercept vehicle ferrying 282kg of suspected bhang in Kisumu
Police said the large quantity recovered suggests an organised supply network, raising concerns about the growing presence of drugs in institutions of learning/NPS

NAIROBI, Kenya Oct 31 – Police are pursuing a driver who escaped arrest after officers intercepted a vehicle ferrying 282.55 kilogrammes of suspected cannabis sativa in Kisumu County.

The driver reportedly defied police orders to stop during an intelligence-led operation conducted on Friday, October 30, triggering an attempted getaway.

Officers were forced to deflate one of the vehicle’s tyres to stop it, but the driver managed to escape amid the ensuing commotion.

The vehicle’s passenger was arrested and is being held in police custody.

A search of the vehicle subsequently uncovered the suspected narcotics packed in sacks, with the consignment weighing 282.55 kilogrammes.

Investigators are yet to establish where the consignment was headed or the wider network behind its transportation.

The arrested suspect and the recovered substance have been handed over to police as efforts to track down the fleeing driver continue.
