Star Trek needs no introduction, but there's a lot to juggle, especially if you're coming in as a new fan. The original show and its wacky cartoon run are easy to follow, but once you get into the '90s, Star Trek comes back in a big way.
From there, Star Trek leaped into multiple formats, including video games and tabletop, and the number of iterations is staggering. Take the Star Trek Customizable Card Game, released in 1994, which is still around thanks to the tireless efforts of the CCG community.
Over on Zatu, we're getting a good look at exactly what you can expect next from Star Trek. The good news is that it spans multiple eras and has something for just about every fan.
Later this year, Star Trek Ascendancy: The Final Frontier is coming out, thanks to its revival crowdfunding efforts on Gamefound earlier this year. The Final Frontier is a re-release of the game, complete with new factions like the Gorn, the Tholians, and the Terran Empire, plus multiple new game modes, more support for solo play, and built-in storage. It's a pricey $130 USD, but that's significantly cheaper than the all-in option of $249.99.
In case you aren't familiar with Star Trek: Ascendancy, it's a tabletop 4X game published by Gale Force Nine, and it was originally released in 2016, and had a massive following behind it. As you might imagine with a classic 4X game, you'll need to explore space (made up of tiles that change each match), make deals with people, go on away missions to other planets, and either forcefully take over other settlements or defend the ones you have.
Ascendancy is an asynchronous game; each player has a unique faction, which influences your playstyle. The Federation might go for a more peaceful approach (though they have plenty of firepower), while the Klingons need to lean into their military might.
Here's the quick rundown: "Star Trek Ascendancy: The Final Frontier is the ultimate collection of the most thematic 4x space game in the universe. Introducing brand new, Gamefound Exclusive, civilizations: The Gorn, The Tholians and The Terran Empire. Alongside two brand new ways to play with Campaign Mode, featuring unique Scenarios offering endless replayability, and Non-Player Civilizations, allowing you to play solo or add even more players to your odyssey across the stars. All contained in a stunning custom storage solution so that you can boldly go where no-one has gone before."
As of the latest update in early October, Gale Force Nine is telling crowdfunding users that shipping is "imminent," and retail copies have been unboxed and inspected in-office. The team is now "putting the finishing touches" on the re-release and aims to ship worldwide as soon as possible, close to their original timeline. You can view every component in their most recent update post.
Any Star Trek fan owes it to themselves to try Ascendancy at some point. Even if you don't go all-in and spend all that cash on the massive deluxe box, trying a round eventually will give you a sense of what the ambitious game is going for.
