Brian Poe plans to file bill to regulate pet crematoriums

MANILA, Philippines — FPJ Panday Bayanihan Party-List Rep. Brian Poe expressed dismay over reports of dead pets being dumped in Bulacan as he announced his plan to file a bill to address the issue.
In a statement, Poe said his bill will be called the proposed Companion Animal After-Life Care and Protection Act or the Beyond Pet Loss and Care Act.
He called on concerned government agencies and local government units to conduct a thorough investigation, inspect establishments offering pet after-care services, and hold those responsible accountable.

“For many Filipinos, pets are not just animals. They are family,” Poe said, stressing that the improper disposal of pet remains is a betrayal of the trust families place in aftercare providers.
Poe thanked the LGUs, Philippine National Police, National Bureau of Investigation, barangay officials, animal welfare advocates, and volunteers who helped expose the incident and respond to it.
He said the incident highlights gaps in existing laws governing pet crematoriums and after-care providers.
The proposed Beyond Pet Loss and Care Act seeks to require pet crematoriums and after-care providers to secure licenses and register in a public registry.

It would also establish standards for handling and cremating animal remains, require records tracking each animal from pickup until its remains are returned, and impose penalties on violators.
“Our responsibility to animals does not end when they die. Pets deserve dignity even in death,” Poe said.
