Pokémon Officially Confirms New Type

Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. The Pokémon franchise is in a great place right now, with all sorts of exciting releases aimed to mark the 30th anniversary of the beloved series. Whether you're a fan of the video games, TCG or everything combined, there has been plenty to keep track of across the board, much of which could have important effects on everything moving forward.
The TCG has arguably been the target of the biggest push to acknowledge just how far Pokémon has come in that time, with a bespoke set that returns highly prominent cards from the past to the fore, as well as adding some exciting new ones. Now, the convenient mobile version of the TCG has even introduced a new typing format to proceedings, and it could have major consequences if adopted more widely.
Over on Pokémon's official YouTube channel, the company uploaded a video confirming that dual-type Pokémon are on the way to Pokémon TCG Pocket, as part of the next Dual Fusions update. Interestingly, they included a description below the original upload, that reads as follows:
"Double your fun with dual-type Pokémon in the upcoming Pokémon TCG Pocket expansion, Dual Fusion! Discover Mega Mewtwo X ex, a Psychic and Fighting dual-type Pokémon, the Water and Darkness dual-type Mega Greninja ex, and other exciting Pokémon! Available October 29."
As first reported by CBR, both Mega Greninja ex and Mega Mewtwo X ex have two types at once, which is a major departure from anything we have seen to date. Dual-type Pokémon are obviously significant from a gameplay perspective because they are able to strike two weaknesses at once. In this case, Mega Greninja ex covers Water and Darkness weaknesses, while Mega Mewtwo X ex hits Psychic and Fighting weaknesses.
Those appear to be the only two dual-type Pokémon coming with this introductory update, though there are other exciting cards that players will want to secure. Those include Mega Dragonite ex, Fuecoco ex, Pikachu ex, and Mew ex, as well as SIR versions of the old classic, Venusaur, Charizard, and Bulbasaur.
Alongside that, six Dual Fusion rental decks will be available for players, which should prove particularly helpful for those who haven't quite managed to get their heads around building one for themselves yet. Among those, there are two dual-type decks that are built around the new additions, which should give us a window into just how potent they are.
This all comes as Pokémon TCG Pocket celebrates two years since its original release, offering players a more casual introduction to the hobby from the comfort of their own phones. Things are also changing right now as part of that, including via the rate at which new packs are introduced, which is being slowed down to every six weeks.
The 30th anniversary set of the main Pokémon TCG will also see its final products launch next month in November, with the always coveted Ultra Premium Collections debuting for the first time. It will be interesting to see how much hype is still hanging around at that point, but it's certainly holding strong for the time being.
