LTFRB suspends PUV fuel discount amid BSKE election ban

MANILA, Philippines — The P12-per-liter fuel discount program will be temporarily suspended starting Friday, Sept. 18, amid an election ban for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced.

In an advisory, the LTFRB said the suspension of the P12 discount provided to public utility jeepneys (PUJs) and UV Express units is being implemented while awaiting Commission on Elections (Comelec) approval for the program’s continuation.

The election ban for the BSKE took effect Friday and will last until Nov. 1.

The ban prohibits the release, disbursement or expenditure of public funds for social welfare and social services, with the exception of those authorized by the Comelec.

“The temporary suspension is being implemented pending the appropriate action and approval from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for the resumption of disbursement,” it said.

However, the House of Representatives on Sept. 16 adopted the Senate’s version of a bill extending the term of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials to five years, Senate Bill No. 2397, sending it straight to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

If signed into law, the bill would effectively suspend the BSKE scheduled for Nov. 2, with the elections to be held instead on the second Monday of November 2028. /das
