‘Street Fighter’ Socks Away $4M in Previews as ‘You Can See Everything’ Takes $1.7M
Street Fighter is throwing its weight around as it kicks off its box office run, facing fellow newcomers such as the Elizabeth Holmes documentary You Can See Everything.
Paramount Pictures releases Street Fighter in more than 3,500 North American theaters, with the film grossing $4 million from Thursday previews. The studio projects Kitao Sakurai’s feature to open in the mid-$30 millions domestically from an $82 million production budget. Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji and Callina Liang star in the movie that adapts the Capcom video game centering on a combat tournament.
Street Fighter is whiffing with critics, holding a 45 percent critics approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an audience score of 82. In his review for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Frank Scheck called the film a “jumbled tonal mess” and “only sporadically entertaining.”
Boasting an impressive start for a documentary is A24’s You Can See Everything, which collected $1.7 million from Thursday previews. Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s $5 million-budgeted feature about Theranos founder Holmes’ life before starting her prison sentence debuts in 855 North American theaters. The project could notch more than the $7 million that Melania earned in its opening weekend earlier this year when it launched as the highest-grossing non-music doc in over a decade.
You Can See Everything has received a dazzling reception with a 100 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 99 rating from audiences. In her review for THR, critic Angie Han heralds it as “smart, funny and full of surprises.”
Focus Features’ Sense and Sensibility heads to 2,436 North American locations, earning $1.1 million from Thursday previews. Focus projects an $8 million opening for director Georgia Oakley’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s enduring novel, with the movie carrying a budget in the mid-$20 millions. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles star as the Dashwood sisters as they navigate life and romance following their father’s death. Ang Lee directed the 1995 Oscar-winning adaptation starring Emma Thompson.
The latest Sense and Sensibility holds a 77 percent approval from Rotten Tomatoes critics. Rooney writes that the film “seldom steps out from the long shadow of Ang Lee’s enchanting 1995 retelling.”
Looking to make a splash from 3,065 North American locations is 20th Century Studios’ Whalefall, as director Brian Duffield’s thriller reeled in $900,000 from Thursday previews. The studio expects an opening between $10 million and $12 million for the $60 million-budgeted feature that adapts author Daniel Kraus’ 2023 novel.
Austin Abrams, having led last month’s Resident Evil, stars as a scuba diver who, while searching for the remains of his late father (Josh Brolin), is swallowed by a sperm whale. Whalefall holds a 71 percent critics approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with THR chief film critic David Rooney noting in his review that the movie is “just not batshit crazy enough to be much fun.”
