'Avengers: Doomsday' vs 'Dune: Part Three': December 2026 box office clash intensifies as fans begin 2-month release countdown

The much-anticipated box office showdown between Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three’ and the Russo brothers’ ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is officially 2 months away. With both films targeting the holiday season, the battle for box office supremacy has begun, with fans setting up the countdown to the clash that has been dubbed as 'Dunesday'.‘Dune: Part Three’, which is expected to conclude Paul Atreides’ saga, stars Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, alongside Robert Pattinson, Florence Pugh and other returning cast members. Meanwhile, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ features Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, with Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal among its ensemble cast.

‘Dune: Part Three’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ release dates

The ‘Dunesday’ clash began taking shape in June 2024, when Warner Bros. reserved December 18, 2026, for a Denis Villeneuve event film that would eventually become ‘Dune: Part Three’.

Disney subsequently moved ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ from its planned May 2026 release to December 18, setting up a direct showdown between the two blockbusters. However, the films are reportedly following different international release schedules.

'Avangers: Doomsday' to get an early release

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is expected to open in select markets ahead of its US debut, with reports listing December 16 releases in the UK, China, France, Malaysia and Singapore.

India, Australia and Mexico are among the territories reportedly scheduled for December 17, while the US, Canada and Japan are listed for December 18.

IMAX battle: Warner Bros secures premium screens

The competition has intensified over access to IMAX theatres. ‘Dune’ has reportedly secured exclusive IMAX screenings during its opening 3 weekends, leaving ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ without access to the format during the crucial initial period.

Warner Bros. is also promoting the film’s IMAX 70mm screenings and more than an hour of expanded aspect ratio footage, positioning the large-format experience as a major attraction for audiences.

Disney launches Infinity Vision for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

With the loss of IMAX screens, Disney has introduced Infinity Vision, a certification for premium large-format cinema screens. The initiative establishes standards covering screen size, image brightness and sound, giving ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ a premium viewing option.
