AFP assesses security arrangements for BARMM parliamentary polls

MANILA, Philippines — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Wednesday assessed intensified security efforts and monitoring in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) as the region’s first-ever parliamentary elections near.

AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Antonio G. Nafarrete, alongside Lt. Gen. Donald Gumiran, Philippine Army commanding general, met with infantry unit personnel in Central Mindanao on Wednesday to discuss ongoing preparations, including monitoring potential security concerns and maintaining heightened vigilance in election areas.

The historic BARMM parliamentary polls will be held on September 14, with about 2.3 million voters expected to elect 80 members of the Bangsamoro Parliament.

Nafarrete has directed commanders and personnel to enhance coordination, intelligence monitoring, and preparedness in addressing election-related security threats.

A total of 27 areas in BARMM were classified under the red category, or the highest alert level, due to severe security threats and previous cases of election-related violence, according to the Commission on Elections.

“The AFP continues to heighten its security preparations for the upcoming elections, with its leadership closely monitoring security concerns, potential threats, and emerging developments that may affect the peaceful conduct of the polls,” the Philippine Army stated in a statement. /gsg
