Apple rolls out iOS 27.2 with new Siri AI languages and security fixes

Translate

Apple has rolled out its latest iOS 27.2 update for iPhones and iPads, featuring expanded language support and improved memory functions for Siri AI, suggestions in messages, and Apple Pencil support for the foldable iPhone Duo.

With the new software update, Siri AI can now be used in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, in beta. Apple says the AI assistant can now remember details from past conversations and answer accordingly. The ability for AI assistants to remember a person’s preferences have been a key area of focus for AI model makers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, whose assistants now do a better job at recalling facts and choices related to users.

Apart from its own suggestions and answers, Siri can also tap into sources like photos attached in Messages, calendar event attendees, voicemails, Safari history, and reading lists. Users can define what apps they might want to exclude from Siri AI’s memories.

While the iPhone Duo is facing some display related problems for early buyers, Apple is adding more features with the update. iOS 27.2 brings Apple Pencil support for the foldable in apps like Notes and Preview. What’s more, users can use the Edge Light effect to highlight their face better during video calls.

The new software version also adds features for FaceTime, including streaming via front and rear camera simultaneously through Dual Capture for group call, and ability to add a third-party sign language interpreter or live captioner to a call.

Users on iOS 27.2 will get suggestions to add a message as an item in a reminder or an event in a calendar. Plus, users can edit captions or add comments in Shared Albums along with reminders of the expiry date of the folder.

The update also refreshes the Podcast app, which will show new episodes from the shows you follow and also the episodes that you are currently listening to.

Apple has also added Multiview to iPhone so viewers can watch up to four live sport streams simultaneously on Apple TV such as Major League Soccer (MLS), Formula 1 (F1) in the U.S., and Friday Night Baseball doubleheaders during the Major League Baseball (MLB) season. Users can also view multiple feeds of F1 during the broadcast.

iOS 27.2 also packs in over 160 security fixes, according to the company’s release documentation. Many of the bug fixes were also backported so that users running the older iOS 26 software can benefit from the fixes.

Apple says that about 80% of iPhone owners are still running iOS 26.

Meanwhile, Apple backported a specific bug fix to users of iOS 18, first released in 2024, which Apple says may have been exploited “in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on versions of iOS before iOS 27.” This is standard language that Apple uses when someone’s phone has been compromised by government spyware or a law enforcement forensic device, but did not provide specifics about who was exploiting it.
