Jorge Jesus explains why he called up Cristiano Ronaldo to Portugal Squad

Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has explained his decision to include Cristiano Ronaldo in his latest squad, making it clear the veteran forward remains in his plans because of what he can still offer on the pitch.

The 41-year-old remains a key figure for Portugal and was included in Jesus’ first squad as national-team manager. The decision comes as Portugal begins a new chapter under Jesus, with the coach stressing that Ronaldo’s selection is based on his current performances and contribution rather than his illustrious history.

Jesus acknowledged Ronaldo’s extraordinary status in Portuguese football but insisted that past achievements will not influence his team selection.

He said,

"His performance is what matters. The past doesn’t count. Cristiano is a player like all the others. If he is performing well, he will play. If he isn’t, he won’t. He has a different status and has won five Ballon d’Or awards, but does that influence my decisions? No. But is he a different player? Absolutely."

The former Al Hilal and Fenerbahçe manager also made it clear that Ronaldo will be treated like every other player in the squad. If he performs at the required level, he will play; if he does not, his place in the starting XI will not be guaranteed.

That approach highlights Jesus’ intention to maintain competition within the Portugal squad, even with a player who has won five Ballon d’Or awards and holds numerous international records.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer and one of the most experienced players in international football. His presence also gives Jesus a proven goalscoring option as the new manager begins to establish his own ideas.
