BBC's hit crime drama This City Is Ours gets future confirmed ahead of season 2 debut

Hit BBC crime drama This City Is Ours hasn't even premiered its second season yet, but ahead of its return this Sunday, we've got some good news about its future.

The broadcaster has already confirmed that season 3 will be happening, with creator and writer Stephen Butchard on board once again.

Filming for the season is set to take place in Liverpool in 2027, although nothing more specific has been announced about when filming will take place or when it will air.

"Following the quite breathtaking response to series 1, myself, the cast and our wonderful crew were all determined not to drop the ball and endeavour to deliver an even better series 2!" Butchard said about the confirmation.

"No spoilers, but I'm hoping this fantastic early commission from the BBC for a third series is an indication that we may have come close to doing just that! Many, many thanks to Lindsay Salt, Jo McClellan and all at BBC Drama for their never-ending support.

"And of course, sincere thanks to all who have watched, embraced and spread the word. I hope you enjoy series 2 as much as we enjoyed making it — can't wait to do it all over again!"

Salt, the director of BBC Drama, added: "We're delighted to share that This City Is Ours will return for a third series. Stephen Butchard and the team at Left Bank have built a world filled with ambition, authenticity and heart that has been embraced by millions. With series 2 still to come this weekend, there's so much for viewers to look forward to."

Like the first two seasons, This City Is Ours' third season will contain eight hour-long episodes and air on BBC One.

The announcement adds that casting announcements will come "in due course". Could that be because not every character is going to make it out of season 2 alive?

This City Is Ours season 1 can be streamed now on BBC iPlayer. Season 2 begins this Sunday (25 October) at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
