Indian star shuttler P. V. Sindhu advanced to the French Open 2026 quarterfinals after beating Japan’s Riko Gunji 21-12, 21-16 at the Arena Grand in Paris on Thursday.

The Indian will face the winner of the Round of 16 match between Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Pin-Chian and South Korea’s Sim Yu-jin.

Sindhu used her height and reach to attack early, finishing rallies with steep smashes and tumbling net shots, but her composure under pressure once again came under the scanner.

Sindhu led 7-5 early in the first game by taking the shuttle high at the net, building rallies patiently and waiting for the mid-court opening to unleash her steep cross court smashes.

Gunji took the first game to 11-11 at the interval as Sindhu’s early control faded. Knees bent and racquet close to her body, Sindhu held a compact defensive stance to neutralise Gunji’s push.

Sindhu leaned on her reach to cut off Gunji’s clears and finished the first game 21-12 with steep cross-court smashes and tight net play. With her racquet held high, Sindhu cut off Gunji’s drives in the mid-court and made the Japanese shuttler do the running.

Sindhu controlled the rhythm of the match with a patient approach between rallies in the second game.

Sindhu avoided drifting into passivity, controlled the tempo throughout and made Gunji do the heavy baseline running on her way to a straight- games win within 44 minutes.
