The X-Men meet Marvel's latest Sentinel, which is way scarier and possibly more dangerous than the original design. The towering Sentinels are the physical manifestation of human hatred against mutants in the Marvel Universe, manufactured by ordinary human beings and engineered to hunt and execute individuals purely based on their genes. Their unfeeling programming strips away any possibility of empathy, and since they're mass-produced on assembly lines, the X-Men can never be fully certain that they have destroyed the very last of the robots. Like Ultron, there will always be at least one Sentinel out there restarting the cycle.

Throughout X-Men history, these automated hunter-killers have launched devastating campaigns against mutantkind, leading mutants to the brink of extinction on multiple occasions. The most catastrophic assault takes place during E Is for Extinction, where a fleet of wild Mega-Sentinels ambush the island nation of Genosha and slaughter over sixteen million mutant citizens in a matter of minutes. In the dark future timelines of Days of Future Past, advanced Hound-directed Sentinels successfully hunt down and execute nearly every superhero and mutant on Earth. Although the X-Men's joint efforts allow them to slice through single Sentinels, the army of robots never ends.

As House of X perfectly explained, "artificial intelligence is like fire. it's a discovery, not an invention." As much as the X-Men may try to get rid of the Sentinels, the robotic villains will only come back stronger and with new weapons to fulfill their objectives.

An Experimental Sentinel Is Ripped Straight Out Of The X-Men's Worst Nightmares

The Uncanny X-Men #38; Written By Gail Simone; Art By Luciano Vecchio & Matthew Wilson

An experimental Sentinel attacks in The Uncanny X-Men #38

As Sarah Gaunt and her group of Wolverine-like Scavengers prepare to become the X-Men's evil counterparts, the Uncanny X-Men's fabulous Dazzler, Rogue, and Monet St. Croix return to Greymalkin Prison, where they come face to face with an experimental Sentinel. Sporting two extra arms and a permanently open mouth, this prototype Sentinel activates its lethal mode to eliminate the mutant heroes, shooting them with lasers and attempting to crush them like flies with its enlarged hands. The experimental Sentinel's additional limbs allow it to fight multiple mutants at a time, even without using its legs.

Luckily for the heroes, the prototype Sentinel picked the worst possible opponents. Although Dazzler is left with little to use against the giant robot, Rogue easily destroys one of its hands, and Monet flies straight across its head, killing it for good. The true size of the Sentinel is only evident when the three X-Men stand over its inert body, revealing a particularly intricate but still unfinished design. Had a different, more inexperienced team met this new iteration of Bolivar Trask's invention, they would likely have struggled to contain it much more.

The Sentinels Are Rapidly Evolving In Marvel Comics

The Sentinels May Soon Become A Difficult Problem To Ignore

Sentinel-Human hybrids attack in The Uncanny X-Men #27

Marvel's new era of X-Men comics has witnessed a terrifying paradigm change in anti-mutant technology that trades the rigid metallic giants of old for grotesque bio-organic horrors. In Gail Simone’s Uncanny X-Men, the Sentinels have branched out into several different visceral nightmares. The Bloodhound Stealth Sentinels are canine-shaped tracking drones with chainsaw-like teeth, while a wave of Sentinel-human hybrids sport pitch-black eyes and flexible slender bodies. Most unsettling of all are the red, gelatinous Organic Sentinels encountered in the Louisiana underworld, which rely on a biological core that grants them rapid cellular regeneration.

At the moment, these nightmarish new Sentinels are more of an agonizing nuisance rather than the X-Men's primary threats. Powerhouses like Rogue and Monet can come in and destroy them in between their battles with the likes of the sadistic warden Sarah Gaunt and her predatory Scavengers, the demonic Wyvern, and Beast's evil mastermind self from the future, the Chairman. However, as clandestine programs continue to perfect the robots, the Sentinels are only getting more dangerous. It's only a matter of time until they scale up and evolve into an unstoppable threat that the X-Men can no longer keep up with.
