KUALA LUMPUR: A 41-year-old food delivery rider was arrested after leading police on a chase from Sri Petaling to Cyberjaya, crashing into several vehicles along the way.

The suspect, who was driving a Nissan Vanette, was initially spotted using his mobile phone while behind the wheel along Jalan Merah Silu in Sri Petaling at about 1.20pm yesterday.

Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook said the incident unfolded when two policemen conducting a routine patrol in a mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) attempted to stop the van.

"Instead of complying with instructions to stop, the driver made a U-turn and sped off, prompting the policemen to give chase.

"The pursuit continued from Sri Petaling towards the Maju Expressway (MEX) before the suspect was eventually intercepted along Persiaran APEC in Cyberjaya," he said.

Hoo said the suspect had collided with several vehicles during the pursuit.

He said the affected motorists were expected to lodge separate police reports.

Videos circulating on social media showed a van being pursued by police vehicles, including scenes of traffic congestion and a police vehicle with its emergency lights activated.

Another clip, apparently captured from CCTV footage, showed a silver van passing through a toll plaza.

Hoo said a search of the suspect's vehicle did not uncover any prohibited items.

However, a preliminary urine screening test on the suspect returned a positive result for methamphetamine.

"Checks also revealed that the suspect had a criminal record involving four narcotics offences," he said.

Police seized the Nissan Vanette, while investigators were working to trace the vehicle's registered owner to assist in the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of his duties.

Police are expected to seek a remand order against the suspect today.
